NEAR is knocking on $190 million in total locked value, U.Today reports. That's the sum sitting inside DeFi apps on Near Protocol right now. It's close. It hasn't crossed yet. So this is a near-miss with weight. A round number acts like a marker. Traders can see it coming.
$190 million tracks deposits, not price
TVL means total value locked. Think of it as cash sitting in the tills of every shop on one street. It doesn't mean the chain earned it.
It means users parked it there. And parking has a physical step here. A user sends coins to a smart contract.
That contract might be a lending pool or a trading pool. The coins stay there until the user pulls them out. U.Today's $190 million figure adds up all those parked balances.
It leaves some things out too. Coins in a plain wallet don't count. Coins sitting on a centralized exchange don't count.
Only coins held by apps on the chain itself go into the math. That's why TVL reads as trust. People don't lock coins where they can't use them.
They lock them to lend, to trade, or to earn a fee. A rising total says more users are willing to do that on NEAR.
Locked coins still move in one click
But locked doesn't mean stuck. That's the part newcomers miss. Most pools let a user withdraw any time.
It takes one transaction and a few seconds. So money can spin in fast. A big depositor can lift the total in an afternoon.
And that same depositor can drain it just as fast if rates look better somewhere else. This is why watchers don't cheer a single print. They want to see deposits stay.
A total that holds for days says something different from a total that spikes for an hour. For NEAR, that distinction matters right now. Approaching $190 million shows fresh interest.
Holding above it would show staying power.
The $190 million line is the test now
Round numbers pull attention because they're easy to track. Funds notice them. App teams notice them.
Everyday holders notice them too. That attention cuts both ways. A push over the line can bring in copycats.
People see growth and they add a little more. A stall just under it can do the opposite. People wait.
So the concrete thing is simple. Watch whether NEAR prints above $190 million and stays there. One hourly wick isn't much.
Daily closes above it would mean deposits stuck around. If it slips, the question is how far. A small dip and a bounce says users are still engaged.
A sharp drop says the approach was one or two big wallets, not broad demand.
